She’s Someone.

Art is a big part of social change especially today as many protests and changes begin on social media, art has become essential. There is currently a poster picture going around the internet that says “She’s someone’s sister/mother/daughter/ wife” and the words that come after “someone’s” are crossed out with a line. This poster has caught my eye since the first time I have noticed it because although it may be very simple, the message behind is very strong. This poster is used to show that a woman’s worth isn’t based on the person she is to others, she should be valued for just being a person. A woman doesn’t need any other title to be worth respect. I saw many versions of this poster on social media recreated by many people at different protests for women’s rights. This piece of art has motivated me to speak up in conversations where I would normally be quiet and just observe. Through this art I have gained the confidence to talk about why women deserve respect for just being human, and that women don’t need another reason to deserve the respect of others. Many people in the past may have thought that by telling someone who is disrespecting a women phrases like, “what if this was happening to your daughter?” or “ Would you like someone to do this to your wife?” they were doing the right thing by getting others to understand why they think women deserve respect. But in reality phrases like this have taught many people that women only deserve respect because they may have a “title” when in reality all women deserve equal respect for just being human they need no other reason. The conversations I have had because of this piece of art have been a learning experience for me. I now know a very small piece of what many other women and men who fight every day for women’s equality go through because these conversations are sometimes hard and uncomfortable to have. But these conversations are necessary. There may be people who don’t agree with what this piece of art stands for, but that’s why it’s important to continue trying to talk and having my voice heard even when I feel defeated and uncomfortable. Many women don’t have the opportunity to vocalize their opinions and stand for women’s rights, and that’s why I feel that it’s important for me to do my part because many can’t. This piece of art has also motivated me to recreate it at home, which I have since placed in my room. I have also begun to look into women artists who sell their art online. This piece has inspired me to look at more art and buy from women who are trying to empower others. I hope that in the future when attending protests or part of a social change on social media I create my art for others to see and gain a sense of motivation, as I did.
